Believing in God
Is There A God?
Humans throughout the history of time have debated that question. Perhaps you’re trying to decide for yourself right now. How you answer that question will affect every aspect of your life, from relationships to how you see the universe to your purpose while here on earth.
Perhaps the best place to start is to acknowledge up front that our 21st century desire to prove or disprove God’s existence through science will do us no good. After all, scientific proof requires recreating something or observing a situation. No one alive observed the creation of the earth, for instance, nor can science recreate that event. Likewise, it cannot be scientifically proven that Napolean really existed. Science, while wonderful in so many ways, is not a panacea.
It’s probably also helpful to point out initially that, despite what some people may think, science and God are not mutually exclusive. In fact, many of history’s most respected scientists believed in God, including Albert Einstein, Francis Bacon, Galileo, Copernicus and Roger Bacon. Ninety percent of astronomers, who spend hours upon hours studying the universe, believe in God.
Nature
Is there a God? Let’s consider the question from what we can see and observe: nature and the world around us.
Imagine if you were walking through a dense forest and found a Rolex watch. Would you conclude that, like everything in the universe, it had evolved over millions of years, that the watch had its first beginnings as a large rock and somehow, some way ended up as the piece of jewelry in your hand? Not likely. You’d probably conclude that something so intricate, so complicated and so beautiful had to have been made by someone.
In the same way, after studying the universe for so many years, scientists such as Einstein had no choice but to conclude that there is a supreme being, someone who designed and created everything. They concluded that science and the Bible were compatible, not at odds.
It’s interesting to note that anthropological research indicates that among the most remote primitive peoples living today there is a universal belief in God. In fact, the majority of humanity throughout history has believed in some kind of god or gods.
Could it be because they can see the brush stroke of a designer in nature?
In The Beginning
Our universe got its start long ago, but, like everything, it had to have been caused by someone or something. Nothing plus no one cannot equal everything. The astronomer Sir Fred Hoyle said “As biochemists discover more and more about the awesome complexity of life, it is apparent that its chances of originating by accident are so minute that they can be completely ruled out. Life cannot have risen by chance.”
There are approximately 11 million species of life on earth, including humans. Did that just happen by chance, or did someone make it happen?
If the earth were either 10 percent larger or 10 percent smaller, then life would not be possible. Did that just happen by chance, or did someone make it happen?
The earth’s atmosphere, availability of water and ozone layer is uniquely geared to supporting human life–no other place in the universe is capable of sustaining life. Did that just happen by chance, or did someone make it happen?
The average human brain weighs just over three pounds but can outperform what 500 tons of electrical and electronic equipment can do. Did that just happen by chance, or did someone make it happen?
In speaking about the human eye, evolutionist Charles Darwin said “To suppose that the eye, with so many parts all working together…could have been formed by natural selection, seems, I freely confess, absurd in the highest degree.”
The Christian Bible says that nature and the world around us is evidence that God exists. » Romans 1:20 » Psalms 19:1
Right And Wrong
Universal right and wrongs is another consideration when questioning whether God exists. Why is it that throughout the history of time, regardless of the culture or civilization, there appears to be a basic idea of right and wrong? Why is it that humans consider it wrong to kill? Why is it that, in general, there appears to be a behavioral standard that applies to all people? If the universe came about by chance and humans evolved from ape-like creatures, then where do animals such as us get our basic sense of right and wrong? It’s one thing to believe that we could evolve physically, but how do morals evolve?
In Search Of God
As a final consideration for the existence of God, why have humans throughout history pursued a relationship with a higher being? And once people have claimed to discover God, how can we explain the dramatic changes in their lives?
Changed Lives
In his book “Through the Valley of the Kwai,” Ernest Gordon writes about when he and his fellow soldiers were tortured and starved by their captors during a war. Because of their harsh treatment, Gordon described the group of men as animals, clawing and fighting and stealing food from each other. Things got so bad, Gordon says, they finally decided to read the New Testament in the Bible. After listening to its words, each of the prisoners believed in God and became Christians. The lives of those men changed dramatically, as have the lives of Christians throughout history.
Conclusion
God DOES exist and He loves you very much. And if you earnestly look for God, you will also find His Son, Jesus Christ. » John 3:16-18 » John 14:6 » Acts 4:12
